Sumitomo Heavy Industries Marine & Engineering Co., Ltd. has been awarded basic design approval (Approval in Principal) from LRQA for medium-sized tankers equipped with LNG dual fuel systems.
The design incorporates the installation of two IMO Type-C LNG tanks and an FGSS (Fuel Gas Supply System) and offers a greater reduction in emissions than is required under energy efficiency design index (EEDI) – Phase 3 that will be IMO applicable from 2025 and also contributes to secure adequate storage of LNG fuel with no reduction in cargo tank capacity.
The design supports Sumitomo’s drive to improve sustainability in shipping through the enhancement of its technological capabilities, particularly those contributing to the reduction of emissions and other environmental impacts.
LRQA has enjoyed a long and strong relationship with Sumitomo. Michinori Kurihara, Manager of LRQA's Yokohama Technical Support Office, said: “We are very happy to support this AiP which is another remarkable step forward in Sumitomo’s future. We shall provide the best service to them at the plan approval stages of their LNG fuelled tankers.”
Mark Darley, LRQA's LRQA North Asia President, awarding the AiP, said: “This is a great milestone in our longstanding relationship with Sumitomo Heavy Industries Marine & Engineering Co., Ltd and its strong design capability in LNG dual-fuel middle size tankers. We are proud to be part of these dual-fuel developments, which support the maritime industry’s drive on emission reduction.”
