Client challenge
Our client asked us to complete a Level 2 Fatigue Design Assessment (FDA2) of a naval platform. This was a new type of request, unlike a typical FDA2 analysis – for example, of a bulk carrier or tanker. The vessel operation, voyage profile and structural configuration of a naval vessel are unique. Our applied technology experts needed to create a completely new tool.
How we helped
To address the ship-specific requirements of a naval platform, we developed Naval ShipRight FDA2 software. This combined:
- our experience in analysing naval vessels and developing configuration, route, and service requirement dependent operational spectra, with
- our naval vessel ShipRight module to determine representative fatigue lives for real world naval configuration.
Our experts also made use of analytical methods, based on a first principles’ approach. This further enhanced confidence in the accuracy of the fatigue damage levels predicted by the Naval FDA2 software and the final project deliverables.
Our depth of knowledge in fatigue damage prediction and application of first principles and finite element methods also proved valuable. We were able to support our client by completing the fatigue assessment and offering both operational and structural alternatives to address specific fatigue susceptibilities and sensitivities.
Insight
ShipRight is LRQA's design assessment tool for structural and fatigue assessment and forms part of our classification service offering. It provides complete, end-to-end, assessment of structures against LRQA’s direct calculation procedures.
Powerful results
Naval ShipRight FDA2 software offers navies and governments globally the opportunity to target fatigue failure regions quickly. The new robust tool helped our client to reduce risks and solve fatigue issues quickly, saving significant time and money.
